What you'll need

  • •Your destination and any stop or station name you know
  • •A travel date and approximate departure time
  • •Sri Lankan rupees in small notes or coins for local fares
  • •A phone or written note with the route and destination
  • •A booked ticket or reservation confirmation when you have reserved a seat
  1. 1

Choose a bus or train for your journey

For a local journey, check whether a bus route serves the places you need; for longer corridors, see whether a train is available. Services differ by area and time, so choose using the actual departure point and destination rather than relying only on a route name.

  2. 2

Check the route and departure information

Check the route, destination and expected departure before leaving. For an SLTB service, consult the Board’s official website for its current service information, then confirm the specific route and departure with the terminal or transport staff because routes and times can change. For a train, verify departure information with Sri Lanka Railways or at the station.

Visit the Official Sri Lanka Transport Board Website
  3. 3

Find out how to pay and whether to reserve

Ask the operator, station or ticket counter about the fare and accepted payment method before boarding, and whether advance reservation is available for your service. Carry some Sri Lankan cash for local services if cards or app payments are not accepted. If you book through an official channel, keep the confirmation; do not assume every bus or train offers or requires advance booking.

  4. 4

Go to the correct stop, stand or platform

Use the station or bus stand named for your departure, then check the destination board or ask transport staff to confirm the vehicle. At a busy terminal, verify the route before boarding; do not assume that a vehicle passing the stop will serve your destination. Keep your ticket or reservation details ready.

  5. 5

Board safely and pay or show your ticket

Wait until the vehicle is stopped and board at the designated point. On a local bus, tell the conductor your destination and pay the fare they confirm; keep the ticket if one is issued. For a reserved bus or train, show the booking confirmation as requested. Keep valuables secure and avoid blocking the doorway.

  6. 6

Track the journey and get off at your stop

Follow station announcements, route signs or your own map, and ask the conductor or staff before your stop if you are unsure. Allow time to reach the exit and get off only at the proper stop or platform. Keep the ticket until the journey is over in case it is checked.
