How to Book a Train Ticket in Sri Lanka
What you'll need
- •Your departure and arrival stations
- •Travel date and preferred train or time
- •Passenger names and identity details requested by the booking form
- •A payment method accepted by the booking service
- •A phone or email address to receive booking updates
- 1
Plan the Sri Lankan rail route
Write down the station you will leave from and the station where you need to get off. Check the journey date and direction carefully; a route may have different trains and stopping patterns on different days. Use the Sri Lanka Railways reservation service to look for journeys that accept advance seat reservations.
- 2
Choose a date and available train
Search for the exact travel date and compare the trains shown for your station pair. Online reserved seats are offered only for services and dates listed by the system, so do not assume every train can be booked online. If your journey is not listed, ask at a railway station ticket counter about the available ticket option.
- 3
Select the class and seats shown
Choose only a class and seat option displayed as available for that train. Check the departure and arrival stations again before continuing. Reservation availability can vary by service; if no reserved class is offered, confirm station-ticket arrangements before travelling rather than paying through an unrelated seller.

Enter each passenger’s details
Fill in each passenger’s name and any identity or contact details requested by the booking form. Review spelling and the passenger count before submitting, and keep the identity document used for the booking available during the trip in case it is requested.
- 5
Review the booking and make payment
Before paying, confirm the journey date, train, stations, class, passenger details and total shown on the official service. Use a payment method offered on that page. If the result is unclear after payment, check the booking status before trying again so you do not create or pay for a duplicate booking.
- 6
Keep the confirmation and prepare to board
Save the ticket or confirmation where you can open it without relying on a weak signal, and note any reference number. Reach the correct station with time to check platform information, then follow station announcements and staff directions. Keep your ticket available until your journey is complete.
